Waking Journeys - Yoga and Qigong Retreats, Workshops and Holidays

Yoga and Qigong in Sicily, Italy
October 6th - 11th  2010

The priority of this retreat is the practice of yoga and qigong with an emphasis on self-awareness and energy cultivation. We seek to maintain the framework of physical awareness and mindful activity while engaging in sightseeing, mountain trekking, and traditional pizza eating. Is it possible? We strongly believe YES! Even better, what an amazing opportunity to be more present, more aware, and more alive to the beauty of this country that we have the privilege to visit!

Why Sicily? Besides being revered as one of the most beautiful places on earth, Sicily is a historical melting pot of culture and traditions. This incredibly diverse landscape combining Greek, Roman, and Norwegian architecture offers us a chance to step out of our familiar territory, away from our cultural habits and tendencies and experience something new.

'Retreats' as a Method

Picture
Retreats offer the opportunity to distance ourselves from our habitual lifestyle- the steady stream of rushing from one thing to the next. While we may take a couple hours to stop and breathe during a yoga class, we tend to jump right back into the old routine of comfortable thoughts, places, feelings. When we bring ourselves to a place that is new and foreign, there is no escaping the freshness of our present condition. We are able to see our new environment clearly and be open to the feelings and senses that may be stimulated and awakened.

This retreat focuses on developing both a yoga and qigong practice.  By combining the practices of yoga and qigong within a daily routine one is able to fully access their physical and energetic body. The yoga emphasizes vigorous movements which remove physical obstacles, allowing for greater range of motion, while the qigong practice incorporates quiet and stillness, cultivating a strong attention to the energetic movement within the body.

This retreat will be limited to 12 participants and we will emphasize the benefits of making this an intentional group-oriented experience. Joining a group of individuals with a similar intention can be a very powerful and rewarding experience. When we unite as a group and practice together, we encourage and inspire each other to stay with the practice. We can also use the group for support for help and advice. The importance of community cannot be over-estimated. Opening yourself to others, supporting and being supported, is critical to reaching your potential.
