Waking Journeys
We are a group of individuals committed to incorporating physical and energetic practices within a retreat environment.
Our retreats prioritize the practice of yoga and qigong with an emphasis on self-awareness and energy cultivation. We seek to maintain the framework of physical awareness and mindful activity while being immersed in the natural beauty of a foreign environment.
Why a foreign environment? Our retreats offer the opportunity to distance ourselves from our habitual lifestyle- the steady stream of rushing from one thing to the next. While we may take a couple hours to stop and breathe during a yoga class, we tend to jump right back into the old routine of comfortable thoughts, places, and feelings. When we bring ourselves to a place that is new and foreign, there is no escaping the freshness of our present condition. We are able to see our new environment clearly, and be open to the feelings and senses that may be stimulated and awakened.
Waking Journeys chooses to work with people who are local to the area and are devoted to sustainable practices of tourism. In this way, we have the opportunity to experience places that are generally not accessed by tourists. Our retreats are always located in places that are known to be powerful, vivid, and memorable.
Yoga
Hatha Yoga is an ancient system of working with the body in order to eliminate blocks to health and restore vitality. It incorporates the control of the breath with static and moving postures to bring greater energy and awareness to the practitioner.
Monica’s yoga classes are guided by her focus on mindfulness. She encourages students to take advantage of the precious opportunity to be present to the sensations of their own bodies while clearing obstructions to allow for freedom of movement. Her classes combine both vigorous activity with sustained postures to bring flexibility and strength to the body and peace and calm to the mind.
Qigong
On the surface, Qigong is an exercise that builds the immune system and strengthens the body through a series of slow movement, formed in synchrony with deep breathing rhythms. But on closer inspection, qigong reveals itself to be a self-healing and consciousness-expanding tool using a moving form of meditation.
Jin Jing Gong, roughly translated as "Tendon Strengthening Qigong" is a particular form of qigong that utilizes the control of the breath combined with movements that pull on the fascial layers of the body to effectively move energy through the entire system.
Both Jimmy and Monica have studied with the lineage holder of Jin Jing Gong, Master Wang as well as his lineage holders in the United States and are approved Jin Jing Gong teachers.
